BY JAMES W. FOLEY

 The Full Poem:-

Stanza wise explanation :-

Stanza 1 and 2 --
EXPLANATION:-
If you drop a pebble in water, just a splash is caused and in a moment it vanishes inside. But it's after effect remains. It creates hundreds of ripples that starts from the centre and keeps on circling and spreading on the surface of water. It seems no one can say where these ripples will end.
These pebbles are so small that you forget the moment it is dropped and gone inside. But that small thing that affect (both positively and negatively) the normal flow of life. We never know when these time ripples cause a big wave to come and disturb a mighty river. No matter whether you are as big or powerful like a mighty river, even a tiny pebble can cause disturbance in your normal life.

Stanza 3 and 4 :-
EXPLANATION:-
Just like pebbles, if you speak unkind words or show careless attitude towards something or someone, in a moment they are vanished apparently, but their after effects last long, sometimes even for the whole life. Like ripples, the wave of that keeps on spreading and there is no way to stop.
Though the person speaking ununkind words may forget soon, but the listener never forgets. It touches his heart, he becomes sad and just like a big wave, it disturbs his happy life. It stirs tears in his eyes when he thinks more and more of it.

Stanza 5 and 6 :-
EXPLANATION:-
On the contrary, if again, like a pebble, if we drop some kind word and do cheerful task, it definitely goes down in no time, but before going spreads happy ripples everywhere. It also creates small and big waves, but those waves are of joy and comfort. Even one good word is voluminous to bring happiness.
The speaker often forgets what he has told, but the listener always remembers. The gladness goes on circling and swelling till it sounds like a sweet music that can be heard miles and miles beyond. It is never ending and is infinite.

A. When a pebble is dropped in the water, it enters with a splash and then vanishes as it settles deep under water. But it's effect remains for a long time. Hundreds of ripples are formed and they keep on circling and spreading endlessly.
2. How does one disturb the flow of a mighty river just by dropping a stone?
A. A mighty river is disturbed by dropping a pebble in the water. The normal flow of the river gets hampered due to wave like ripples forming from that pebble. From small wave sometimes it becomes a big wave and so gets disturbed.
3. What is the lesson that you learn from the poem?
A. We learn that in the ocean of life, the ripples of kind words, good deeds and caring attitude spread on and on; in the similar way ripples of harsh words, bad deeds and uncaring attitude also spread. Both have a great impact on life. While good words bring happiness, unkind words bring tear. It is upto us what we wish to spread.
4. How is the last para different from the first two?
A. In the last para, the poet tries to explain that cheerful and kind words, though go away like a flash, but it remains in people's heart like hope, comfort and joy. It's gladness swells and it can be heard long after like a sweet music. While the effect of unkind and carelessly spoken words cannot be stopped and can disturb the whole life of the listener.
